Suspected cases of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus have been reported from a church in Incheon's Michuhol District.
Park Young-joon, the head of epidemiological investigation at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, said Friday that tests are underway to see if the three suspected cases involve the new variant.
They are the wife, mother-in-law and acquaintance of an Uzbek man who was confirmed to have Omicron earlier this week.
Park said over 770 people from the church are being screened, adding more COVID-19 infections are likely as they worshipped together last Sunday.
He said if more new cases are confirmed, an analysis will be carried out on them for the presence of the variant.
This could lead to the first Omicron cluster in the country.
South Korea has detected the variant in a total of six patients so far.
