Philip Goldberg, a career diplomat, has been tapped to serve as the new U.S. ambassador to South Korea.
A diplomatic source said Wednesday that the White House designated Goldberg as the new head of its mission to Seoul late last year.
The post has been vacant for more than a year after Harry Harris stepped down when President Joe Biden took office.
Goldberg, who is currently Washington's top envoy to Colombia, coordinated the implementation of United Nations sanctions on North Korea from 2009 to 2010.
A senior Cheong Wa Dae official said the U.S. government earlier notified the presidential office of its intention to nominate Goldberg.
