Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum says the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday could be a turning point in the country's fight against the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
Kim urged people to stay home and stay safe amid the current surge in infections, rather than travel to their hometowns and hold gatherings.
He said if traveling is unavoidable, people should get tested before and after their trips, wear masks that are at least KF-80 and practice social distancing.
During an interagency meeting on the government's COVID-19 response, the prime minister also reminded that the country's testing regime will change from Saturday, with rapid antigen tests to be offered at over 250 screening sites nationwide.
Coronavirus tests will also be available at local clinics.
