A Shincheonji site in Changwon being shut down
Seoul city has banned all Shincheonji gatherings in the capital as the religious sect accounts for a majority of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country.
Violators could be fined up to 3 million won.
Yoo Yeon-sik, an official in charge of cultural affairs, told reporters today that the city had been informed there are 263 Shincheonji-related facilities in Seoul, 188 of which have been shuttered and disinfected.
Yoo said the city is still looking into the 66 other sites as it is difficult to verify whether they belong to the sect or not.
Earlier in the day, health authorities said Shincheonji agreed to provide a complete list of its members and their contact information to the government.■
