Commuters pack a subway train during rush hour.
Commuters on Seoul subways will soon have to wear face masks to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus during rush hour.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Monday this social distancing measure will take effect on Wednesday.
Those who forget to bring masks can buy them at vending machines or convenience stores inside subway stations.
Subway officials will stop passengers without masks from passing through gates when trains hit over 150 percent capacity.
The city also plans to deploy safety personnel to patrol 20 major stations, including Gangnam, Hongdae, Sindorim and Express Bus Terminal from June to encourage riders to keep a safe distance from others on platforms.
In addition, Seoul city will deploy additional train cars and buses during rush hour to reduce passenger congestion.
