Seoul city revealed Thursday it will provide local residents aged 65 and older with free protective face masks as the elderly are the most vulnerable to the novel coronavirus.
Under the latest measure, each senior residing in the capital will receive five surgical or dental masks, which health authorities have recommended for use during the summer season.
They will be delivered to local district offices from July 1 and then distributed to community service centers for pickup.
According to city government records as of the end of May, there were over 1.5 million senior citizens living in Seoul.
Kim Hak-jin, the deputy mayor of safety management, urged the elderly to always wear masks when in public places and refrain from attending gatherings and meetings as the risk of COVID-19 remains.
