The Seoul Metropolitan Government has issued an administrative order banning rallies amid concerns over the spread of COVID-19.
The city announced the move Thursday in response to massive rallies scheduled for Saturday, National Liberation Day.
Based on figures given by the organizers of an estimated 220,000 people were expected to take part in several separate rallies.
Seoul city said it made the decision as many residents are worried that proper preventative guidelines will not be followed such as social distancing and the wearing of masks.
Organizers and participants that violate the order could face legal action or a fine of up to 3 million won.
