Seoul city will extend the operation time of public transport in the capital later this week to accommodate citizens returning from their Chuseok holiday travels.

The demand for late-night public transport services is high during this period as many people visit family members and relatives living in other cities.

Buses and subway will run until 2 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, with reduced operations during the daytime.

Bus-only roads will also operate until 1 a.m. over the two days while nighttime bus and taxi services will continue as usual throughout the extended holiday.

The number of express and intercity buses departing from Seoul will also increase by 708 times per day on average from Tuesday to Sunday, for a maximum 89,000 daily users, up 27 percent from normal operations.

The metropolitan government said it will beef up disinfection activities in public transport and dispatch a greater number of quarantine officials to major subway stations that connect railways, express buses and flights.

In addition, the city plans to reinforce crackdowns on those who do not wear face masks, and make police reports against people who disrupt anti-virus efforts.
