The city of Bucheon in Gyeonggi Province has issued an administrative order mandating certain people get tested for the novel coronavirus amid concerns over the spread of a of a variant first detected in South Africa.
Authorities said residents who have been recommended to get screened by medical staff or pharmacists must do so within 24 hours.
The order lasts two weeks until May 26.
Residents who refuse testing and are later found to be infected will face a fine of up to 2 million won.
Earlier, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said 22 out of 103 recent infections from an elderly care facility in the area were found to be of the more transmissible South African variant.
