A bicycle-only lane opened along the Cheonggye Stream in Seoul on Monday.

The lane spans 5.94 kilometers from the Cheonggye Plaza to the Gosanja Bridge near Yongdu Station in the Dongdaemun District.

The new bike lane is elevated, at sidewalk height, and runs parallel to the pedestrian walkway that overlooks the stream, making it safer, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Officials said riders who use the new lanes will also be able to access the Ttukseom area of the Han River Park without having to use vehicle roads.

The bike lanes are part of the city's plan to build "bicycle highways," also known as the Cycle Rapid Transit, spanning 23 kilometers across the capital, completely separated from car traffic.
