A Japanese national visiting the city of Busan is facing a police investigation for failing to comply with mandatory self-isolation rules aimed at containing the new coronavirus.
Busan's health authorities said Wednesday they reported the Japanese man in his 50s to local police for leaving his designated self-isolation accommodation three times without permission.
The man arrived at Incheon International Airport last Friday and traveled to the southern port city by train before being tested for COVID-19 at Busan Station.
He received a negative test result on Sunday but was ordered to self-isolate for two weeks under South Korea's anti-coronavirus quarantine rules.
The Japanese national is accused of making unauthorized visits to an atm, a post office and a supermarket.
So far, 43 people in Busan, including four foreigners, have been caught leaving their designated self-isolation place.
Foreigners who violate rules can face fines and deportation.
