Emergency medical workers tend to victims hit by a drunk driver in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province on July 9, 2020.
Three marathon runners were killed early Thursday morning after being hit by a drunk driver in Gyeonggi Province.
Police said the fatal crash occurred in Icheon around 3:30 a.m.
The victims, whose identities were withheld, were running along the side of a four-lane road when they were hit from behind by a sedan.
They were seriously injured and died while being transferred to a nearby hospital, according to officials.
The driver, a 30-year-old man, had a blood alcohol level over 0.08 percent, high enough to have his license revoked.
He allegedly told police he didn't see the runners.
The victims were participating in the "2020 Korea Cross-country Ultra Marathon," running 537 kilometers from the southeastern city of Busan to Paju, close to the inter-Korean border.
An investigation into the case is underway.
