National Police Agency Commissioner General Kim Chang-ryong
The National Police Agency has reiterated it will block civic groups from holding rallies across Seoul on National Foundation Day, October 3, to control the spread of COVID-19.
NPA Commissioner General Kim Chang-yong told reporters Monday that officers will be dispatched to multiple locations in the capital where gatherings are scheduled to take place next month.
He said metal fences will be set up at those sites to prevent the rallies from even opening, and added that those who defy the ban can be arrested on the spot.
Earlier, the NPA notified the groups that they will be prohibited from holding their events.
A total of 798 rallies have been registered with authorities.
Similar gatherings by conservative groups on Liberation Day last month led to a resurgence of coronavirus infections that spread in the capital and other regions.
