The provincial government of Jeju is requesting that people with fever or other symptoms of a possible COVID-19 infection to think twice about visiting the southern resort island during the upcoming Chuseok holiday.

The Jeju government announced special health and safety measures Wednesday, including mandatory coronavirus testing for any visitor with a body temperature higher than 37.5 Celsius starting from this weekend through early next month.

All fever-stricken tourists will be required to self-isolate at private residences or other accommodations until the results of their coronavirus tests are available.

Anyone who breaches the measures and tests positive will face criminal punishment and be forced to pay for any resulting quarantine expenses.

This comes as nearly 200,000 tourists are expected to visit Jeju during the extended holiday from September 30 to October 4.

There also concerns over another likely influx of visitors during the Hangeul Day weekend from October 9.

The island has recorded just 58 coronavirus cases so far, remaining one of South Korea's least affected regions.
