The head of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has again urged the public to refrain from holding family gatherings and going on trips during the Chuseok holiday to support efforts to block further spread of the coronavirus.
KDCA Director Jeong Eun-kyeong told reporters Monday that travelers are the greatest risk factors for COVID-19.
She stressed that the actions of the people will determine whether there will be another outbreak in the fall and winter.
Earlier, South Korea experienced surges in new infections after an extended holiday weekend at the end of April and during the peak summer vacation season from July to August.
Jeong noted that family gatherings during these periods contributed to a rise in cases.
She called on citizens who plan to visit their hometowns or travel domestically this week to follow quarantine guidelines and not let their guard down against the virus.
