Congestion slows cars on a section of the Jamwon IC in Seoul's Seocho District during the afternoon hours of Oct. 1, 2020.
Evening traffic is moving relatively smoothly on most expressways across the country, aside from sections of road heading towards the capital region.
The Korea Expressway Corporation said on Thursday that backups on Seoul-bound lanes peaked during the afternoon hours and would likely ease before midnight.
Estimated drive times heading into Seoul as of 6 p.m. showed it would take about two and a half hours for those departing from Daejon or Gangneung, four hours and forty minutes from Daegu or Gwangju and five hours for those leaving from Busan.
Drivers are being reminded that toll fees will be collected over the holiday period until Friday, while roadside rest stops suspend dine-in services through Sunday.
