Jeju Gov. Won Hee-ryong speaks during a press conference held at the National Assembly in Seoul on Oct. 20, 2020.
The governor of Jeju Island says his government will take legal action against Japan if it pushes ahead with its reported plan to discharged contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Speaking to reporters in Seoul on Tuesday, Governor Won Hee-ryong said the Japanese government should immediately suspend related preparations.
He added that it should also "transparently" disclose all information regarding contaminated water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant and discuss the water's disposal with other nations.
Last week, Japanese media reported that Tokyo decided on a plan to discharge over one million tons of water from the defunct Fukushima nuclear power plant, damaged in a 2011 earthquake and tsunami, into the sea.
Won said, "Jeju Province will unite with all parties affected by the contaminated water to react to any disposal with all means available," including taking the issue to an international court.
If Japan makes the plan official, it could begin the water discharge process in 2022.
