South Korean officials have no plans to travel to North Korea this week to mark the 22nd anniversary of the long-stalled Mount Kumgang tour project.
An official from Hyundai Group, the parent company of Hyundai Asan, which operated the tours, told reporters on Tuesday that they did not request a visit to the North this year due to the COVID-19 situation.
Instead, company officials will pay respects on Wednesday to Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung at a family burial ground in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province.
Inter-Korean discussions on the joint tours were reportedly suspended in January because of the coronavirus.
The resort closed in 2008 after a South Korean tourist was fatally shot by a North Korean guard.
In October 2019, regime leader Kim Jong-un ordered the demolition of the resort's South Korean-built facilities, describing them as "shabby" and "unpleasant-looking."
