The eastern island of Ulleung, part of North Gyeongsang Province, has reported its first coronavirus case.
Ulleung County confirmed on Wednesday that a fisherman who came from Jeju Island tested positive for the disease the same day.
The man reportedly began feeling symptoms on Tuesday while fishing off the coast of the island.
Local health authorities are determining who the man came into contact with while traveling from his boat to the hospital.
Ulleung, the smallest county in South Korea, is home to some 9,000 residents and had been largely untouched by COVID-19.
