An additional 39 COVID-19 patients have been tied to the IEM School, a Christian missionary training center in Daejeon where a massive cluster of infections has occurred.

Officials from Hongcheon County in Gangwon Province reported Tuesday that a group of IEM students and staff, most in their 20s, tested positive for the virus the previous day.

They had been taking part in a training program at a church in Hongcheon since January 16.

Officials believe the virus easily spread among the students as they stayed in dorm-like accommodations.

They have been taken to a community treatment center in Asan, South Chungcheong Province.

Hongcheon County plans to look into whether the facility violated social distancing and quarantine rules.

More than 170 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in connection to the IEM School in Daejeon, which is known to have a nationwide network of facilities.
