The southeastern city of Suncheon in South Jeolla Province will enforce Level 2 social distancing from 2 p.m. Thursday in response to a coronavirus cluster connected to a nightclub.
Mayor Huh Seok made the announcement during an emergency briefing, saying strengthened distancing rules will remain in place until May 23.
Restrictions will include a ban on private social gatherings of five or more people and the closure of five kinds of nightlife establishments.
Mayor Huh urged residents to avoid contact with visitors set to travel to the area for Buddha's Birthday celebrations and also asked them to refrain from going to other regions for the time being.
Local health authorities said 18 of 20 coronavirus cases confirmed in the past two days have been linked to the nightclub in question.
Those infected include both club employees and customers.
Nine people related to the cluster are said to have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in neighboring Gwangyang and one other in Yeosu.
