The head of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has called on people over the age of 60 to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Jeong Eun-kyeong noted during a briefing Thursday that the coronavirus fatality rate for the elderly is considerably higher than any other age group.
Seniors in the country will be eligible to start getting shots in the coming weeks.
According to the government data, 9.5 out of 10 deaths caused by the coronavirus were patients over 60.
The state-run vaccination task force said more than 38 percent of people between 65 and 69 have so far signed up to get the shots.
More than 51 percent of seniors over 70 have also applied.
Reservations for adults aged 60 to 64 also opened on Thursday.
