A woman who abused her adopted daughter to death has been sentenced to life in prison.
The Seoul Southern District Court ruled on Friday that the woman, identified only by her surname Jang, intentionally harmed her 16-month-old daughter, named Jung-in.
The woman had claimed that the baby's death was an accident.
Jung-in was adopted in February of last year and died eight months later after suffering severe abdominal injuries and internal bleeding caused by "strong external force," according to an official autopsy.
Signs of prolonged abuse such as fractured bones and bruises in various stages of healing were also found on her body.
Earlier, the woman's husband was sentenced to five years behind bars for child abuse and aiding and abetting.
The case shocked the country and reignited calls to fix systemic failures in the welfare system and provide protection for vulnerable children.
