A heat wave warning has taken effect in Seoul as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, as sweltering conditions were forecast to persist.
The heat alert is issued when the mercury is expected to top 35 degrees Celsius for more than two days.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, afternoon high temperatures in the capital could reach 35 degrees.
Heat advisories in 25 cities in Gyeonggi Province, including Suwon, Seongnam, Osan, Anseong, Yangpyeong, Dongducheon and Gwacheon, were also upgraded to warnings.
Health officials have urged people in the affected areas to avoid outdoor activities and drink plenty of water to prevent heat-related illness.
