The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has revised guidelines for handling deaths and funerals for COVID-19 patients.
From Thursday, the families of people who die from coronavirus can choose whether to cremate the bodies of the deceased before or after the funeral.
The KDCA said the change reflects updated assessments that show the chance of COVID-19 spreading from corpses is very low.
At the start of the pandemic two years ago, the government applied a measure that required cremation before a funeral is held for a coronavirus victim.
That move followed advice from the World Health Organization that warned of the possibility of virus transmission.
