Tokyo gears up for the Olympics
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga says the International Olympic Committee and local organizers are going as planned with this summer's Tokyo Games amid claims that it could be canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Suga made the remark today after an assertion by IOC veteran Dick Pound, who said organizers face a three-month window to decide the fate of the games.
Pound said the fast-spreading virus could cancel the Olympics altogether.
Suga stressed that Pound's opinion does not reflect the official view of the IOC, which has repeatedly said there are no plans to scrap or postpone the Tokyo Games.
The competition is set to open on July 24.■
