Kwon Soon-woo has become the third South Korean man to win a Grand Slam tennis match.
Kwon knocked out American Thai-Son Kwiatkowski 3-1 (3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 6-2) in the opening round of the U.S. Open in New York city on Monday.
The 73rd-ranked Kwon joins Lee Hyung-taik and Chung Hyeon as the only South Korean men to win a match at one of the four major tournaments in tennis.
Lee and Chung also picked up their first Grand Slam victories at U.S. Open tournaments.
Kwon will next face 12th ranked Denis Shapovalov of Canada in the second round, which will be played Wednesday.
