Former South Korean footballer and coach Yoo Sang-chul died Monday after a battle with cancer.
Incheon United of the K League 1, the last club Yoo coached, announced he passed away around 7 p.m. at a hospital in Seoul.
He was 49.
The midfielder spent his 16-year club career in Asia, playing in Japan's J-League and South Korea's K-League.
He then went into coaching but was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2019.
Yoo was also a key member of the national team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, when the Taeguk Warriors went to the semifinals.
He scored the insurance goal in his team's 2-0 win over Poland for South Korea's first victory at the international tournament.
