South Korea fell to New Zealand 0-1 in men's football Thursday, opening the group round at the Tokyo Olympics.
New Zealand striker Chris Wood potted the lone goal in the second half after a long stretch of ball dominance by South Korea at Ibaraki Kashima Stadium in Kashima, northeast of Tokyo.
Team Korea will next face Romania on Sunday in a virtual must-win game, and then Honduras next Wednesday.
The top two teams will advance to the quarterfinals.
Looking ahead to other Olympic action, men and women archers from South Korea will take part in ranking rounds on Friday morning, ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony.
Rowing events are also scheduled for Korean athletes.
