This year's Winter Universiade, which was set to take place next month in the Swiss city of Lucerne, has been canceled amid concerns over the new Omicron coronavirus variant.
Organizers made the announcement Monday after Switzerland imposed border restrictions on travelers from several countries where the variant has been confirmed.
International University Sports Federation Acting President Leonz Eder said "The decision was made with a heavy heart."
Around 1,600 university athletes from 50 countries, including South Korea, were scheduled to compete in various sports, including figure skating, snowboarding and ice hockey.
