The United States has designated North Korea as one of the worst human trafficking nations for the 18th consecutive year, along with China, Iran and Russia.

In the State Department's annual "2020 Trafficking in Persons Report" released Thursday, North Korea was listed in the lowest Tier 3.

The report cited the communist government's lack of efforts and failure to fully meet minimum standards for the elimination of human trafficking.

It detailed abuses by the North, including its mass forced mobilization of adults and children, prison camps and labor training centers, and its imposition of forced labor conditions on North Korea's overseas contract workers.

According to the State Department, the North also used proceeds from state-sponsored forced labor to fund government functions as well as other illicit activity.
