North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said his country needs to prepare for both dialogue and confrontation with the United States.
At a meeting of senior Workers' Party leaders, Kim said they should be fully prepared in order to protect the dignity of the state and reliably guarantee a "peaceful environment," the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported Friday.
He also called for "sharply and promptly reacting to and coping with the fast-changing situation" and efforts to stably control the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
It marked Kim's first message pointed at the U.S. since President Joe Biden took office.
The regime has previously accused Biden of a hostile policy towards Pyongyang.
In May, the U.S. administration completed its North Korea policy review and said it would pursue a "calibrated, practical approach" toward the goal of the complete denuclearization of the peninsula.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in and President Biden agreed in their bilateral summit last month to pursue diplomacy to resolve the North's nuclear issue.
