The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said Friday that Pyongyang is willing to resume talks with South Korea if it gets rid of its hostile policy towards the regime.

Kim Yo-jong made the remark in a statement carried by the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency in response to President Moon Jae-in's renewed calls for a declaration to end the Korean War.

He made the proposal at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

Kim said to achieve the end-of-the war declaration "We must ensure mutual respect toward one another and abandon prejudiced views, harshly hostile policies and unfair double standards toward the other side first."

The war ended in 1953 with an armistice and not a peace treaty.

Cheong Wa Dae called Kim's comments "very meaningful."

Senior presidential secretary Kim Soo-hyun told local media that it's too early to release a statement but stressed the government will take it seriously.

Earlier, North Korea rejected the proposal, with its Vice Foreign Minister Ri Thae-song saying it has "no legal binding force" and will "become a mere scrap of paper in a moment upon changes in situations."
