Artist Kim Heung-su developed the concept of “harmonism,” which is a way of combining different concepts and techniques in one frame. He has played a pivotal role in boosting the status of Korean modern art by whipping up new, innovative art forms and methods.

Under the concept of harmonism, an artist takes two very different things and makes something whole and beautiful, incorporating the ideas of yin and yang.

It is essentially derived from Asian spirituality, exploring how opposing forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world.

The collection currently on display includes a total of 12 pieces of Kim’s past works, such as his nude series from the 1990s.

Born in Hamneung, North Korea in 1919, Kim went on to study fine arts at Tokyo University. Critically acclaimed since a young age, the painter has held exhibitions across the United States and Europe. He is most noted for his ``Harmonism'' between irreconcilable forms of expression such as abstract and concrete art. He transforms darkness into light, capturing repressed feelings with his fresh and creative imagination.

More Info:

This exhibit is slightly different from previous exhibitions of the museum’s collection.
Rather than classifying the pieces in the exhibition by genre, this exhibit focuses on a single theme - houses - to provide audiences with a new way to look at art.
Through the exhibit, the museum also hopes to provide a point of reference for viewing modern art, which can be difficult to interpret.
The exhibit itself is spread across various rooms lining the corridors of the museum. Each room contains art works that explore the functions different rooms in a house can play. The rooms on the first floor of the museum represent gardens, living rooms and dining rooms. Those on the second floor represent personal spaces such as children’s rooms, dressing rooms, meditation rooms and multimedia rooms.
In addition to the exhibit, the museum has planned a series of activities for students in kindergarten and elementary school, such as workshops in topiary and picture frame making.

This exhibition was planned to offer the point of view that it is able to appreciate the collections in the more new dimension by composing them under one theme rather than to show them according to the classification of the existing collections owned by Seoul Museum of Art. And also, it specially organized an exhibition with the collections that it is possible to show the diversified sides of the modern arts at the same age unlike the existing collections.
So, this collection exhibition will give you the good opportunity to meet with the works of the artists including diversified flows, challenges and new paradigm of modern arts at the same age.
