What are the legal rights of Korean women today? Are there women jurists in Korea? Who was the first? How has the Korean Family Law changed since the 1950s? What are the most serious issues facing women and families today? These are some questions often raised today in Korea - and answers are often hard to find.Sonia Reid Strawn, missionary resident of Seoul since the mid-1960s, will discuss these and other women- and law-related problems at the March 9 meeting of RAS. Ms. Strawn was special assistant to Dr. Tai-Young Lee, founder and director of the Korea Legal Aid Center for Family Relations for twenty years, and served as interpreter-traveling companion to Dr. Lee as well as counselor for cross-cultural family issues at the Center. She also wrote Where There is No Path, a biography of Dr. Tai-Young Lee, a Korean pioneer for women’s rights. The consideration of this topic at an RAS meeting is particularly timely on the day following International Women's Day, March 8.

TRADITIONAL KOREAN BREWERY AND SANJONG LAKE TOUR
Sat 13 March *RSVP by Fri 12 March
8:30AM departure / return around 7:00PM (depends on traffic)
Meeting Place: in front of Yongsan Post Office (Subway, Line number 4, blue line, Sinyongsan Station #429, exit #1)

RSVP to: 02-763-9483 or raskb@kornet.net
About the Tour:This tour offers an opportunity to discover how Korea’s traditional liquors, such as makgeolli, are made. Visitors will learn the significance and steps involved in the process of producing makgeolli, maesil (plum wine, bokbuja (liqueur from black raspberries) and other traditional Korean liquors. Whether you’re a connoisseur of Korean liquors or just interested in observing the process, and maybe even trying your hand at making some, you won’t want to miss this RAS trip.
We will then visit the beautiful Sanjong Lake. Surrounded by craggy peaks and graceful old pine trees, this snow covered frozen lake brings on images of an oriental winter landscape scene on a hanging scroll. Sanjong Lake is a reservoir constructed in 1925 which is tightly confined and recessed into a deep valley. Mountains rise steeply from the lake’s edge. The lake is rather small and its outlet makes a sascading waterfall, so the feel is perceptibly different than most other reservoir-lakes on the peninsula.
You can bring a packed lunch of your own or purchase a Korean lunch from a local restaurant. Spaces Limited - there are a few remaining so book asap if you wish to participate in this tour.
