Throughout human history, the arts have played a key role in our lives. Yet as it is very difficult to quantify the contribution of the arts to society, it continues to be regarded as relatively less important than the sciences. This becomes more apparent in times of economic difficulties - arts programs in schools and funding for city or state arts institutions are typically the ones that are first cut.
