Dokdo defense exercise
The South Korean Navy is kicking off a regular military defense drill around Dokdo amid Japan's continued territorial claims.
The two-day training is scheduled to begin this afternoon and involves warships, fighter jets, and Marines who will be mobilized for a landing exercise.
These drills are held twice a year, since 2003, to show the nation's effective control over the rocky islets.
Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that Tokyo's foreign ministry delivered its protest message against the exercises as it attempted to claim its sovereignty over Dokdo again last month.■
