Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha says North Korea called off high-level talks with the U.S. planned for this week.
Speaking at a National Assembly session today, Kang said Washington informed Seoul that it received a notification from Pyongyang to postpone the meeting.
The remarks confirmed a report by the Wall Street Journal, which cited a U.S. government official as saying that the North canceled the talks.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was scheduled to meet Kim Yong-chol, a close aide to the North's leader Kim Jong-un, on Thursday.
Late Wednesday, the U.S. State Department announced that the meeting will take place at a later date without giving a reason.
Minister Kang said she has yet to discuss the matter with Pompeo.■
