Members of Congress made little to no progress over the weekend, leaving many investors worrying over the prospect of a default. House Republicans and Democrats continue to bicker over President Obama's divisive, healthcare initiative.
If the U.S. fails to raise its debt ceiling before the October 17th deadline, analysts believe a resulting default could lead to a financial crisis similar to the one in 2008.
The government freeze was eased over the weekend when an estimated 400,000 civilian defense workers were allowed to return to their jobs.
However, the shutdown continues to pile on the work for some government agencies still in limbo.
For example, the Environmental Protection Agency reports that trash clean-ups in some states have been fouled up, while the Centers for National Disease Control hasn't been tracking diseases for the last week - an unfortunate case, considering flu season is steadily approaching.
Over here, at the Santa Monica airport, the leftover wreckage of a private jet crash that left 4 dead hasn't been dealt with since government investigators were forced off the job last week.
