U.S. President Joe Biden has voiced his support for a ceasefire after eight days of violence between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza.

During a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden said the U.S. was working with Egypt and others towards halting hostilities.

I think there's hope in Washington at least that they can have more of a direct effect with their own diplomacy.

They see that work with Israel and through partners now with Egypt and others to try and actually bring around a ceasefire rather than kind of a collective condemnation from the Security Council.

Whether or not that will work is very, very tough to say.

I mean, clearly, if you're in Gaza, you're among and around the fighting, then these are simply words and none of them appear to be really leading anywhere fast.

I think that would be the concern on the ground.
