South Korea and the United States have agreed on the importance of holding joint military exercises to maintain a combined readiness posture, the defense ministry said Friday.

During biannual defense talks in Washington this week, the two sides also saw eye-to-eye on the need to hold a trilateral meeting with Tokyo at an early date.

The 19th Korea-U.S. Integrated Defense Dialogue (KIDD), the first of its kind since President Joe Biden took office, was held Wednesday and Thursday to reaffirm the allies' goal of completely denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and establishing permanent peace.

A meeting of defense chiefs from South Korea, the U.S., and Japan could be realized early next month at a key defense summit in Singapore.

The last time they met was at a conference hosted by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in November 2019 in Bangkok.

The next KIDD is scheduled to be held in September in Seoul.
