Vice Health Minister Kang Do-tae says the government is working to procure more COVID-19 vaccines as the pandemic will likely continue through next year.

Kang told reporters Thursday there will be a need for the country to procure additional vaccine supplies, especially since the number of new coronavirus variants continues to grow.

South Korea has so far secured enough doses to fully vaccinate 100 million people, nearly double the country's 52-million population, through contracts with Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Novavax and the COVAX facility.

Experts have said COVID-19 booster shots may be necessary within 12 months of being getting fully vaccinated.
