The city of Wonju in Gangwon Province will enforce Level 3 social distancing measures from Friday as part of local efforts to stem rising coronavirus infections.
Mayor Won Chang-muk announced in an emergency briefing Thursday the tougher rules will remain in place for at least 10 days until August 1.
Under the more stringent antivirus curbs, restaurants, cafes, singing rooms and other entertainment facilities must close at 10 p.m.
Private social gatherings of five or more people will also be banned.
The city decided to further limit public rallies as a major umbrella labor union has planned to stage a protest there on Friday.
Only one-person rallies will be allowed.
Mayor Won asked organizers of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions for their cooperation as the country battles a fourth wave of COVID-19 and warned violators who break virus rules will face stern punishment.
