The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has dismissed prospects for the early resumption of dialogue with the United States.

In a statement carried Tuesday by the North's Korean Central News Agency, Kim Yo-jong said Washington's expectations for talks will "plunge them into a greater disappointment."

She made the remark after U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan described leader Kim's recent call for Pyongyang to be ready for both dialogue and confrontation with the U.S. as an "interesting signal."

It also came a day after the top U.S. envoy for the North, Sung Kim, offered to meet with North Korean officials "anywhere, anytime and without preconditions."

U.S.-led diplomacy aimed at persuading North Korea to scrap its nuclear program has been stalled since February 2019, after negotiations broke down during a summit of its leaders.
