  • ≡ Pence: N. Korea Yet To Take Concrete Steps To Denuclearize

    U.S. Vice President Mike Pence says North Korea has yet to take "concrete steps" to dismantle its nuclear weapons program. Speaking at a meeting of U.S. chiefs of overseas diplomatic missions on Wednesday, Pence said while U.S. President Donald Trump has started a "promising dialogue" with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Washington still awaits Pyongyang to denuclearize. Meanwhile, top North Korean official Kim Yong-chol is reportedly flying to Washington Thursday to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and finalize details of a second summit between their two leaders.   • ≡ S. Korea-US Working Group To Open Video Talks On N. Korea

    South Korean and U.S. officials will open working-level talks today focused on North Korea issues and inter-Korean projects. The meeting of the South Korea-U.S. working group will be held over two days via video conferencing. Unification ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun said the two sides will discuss efforts by the two Koreas to excavate war remains, Seoul's plans to provide the North with antiviral medicines and video reunions for families separated by the Korean War. They may also cover the issue of humanitarian aid to the North. The consultative group was formed last October and is tasked with communication on North Korea's denuclearization, the implementation of United Nations sanctions and inter-Korean ties.■ [2019.01.17]

  • ≡ Ex-Cheong Wa Dae Inspector To Face More Questioning Over Surveillance Claims

    Former presidential office inspector Kim Tae-woo has been summoned for a fourth time over claims he made that Cheong Wa Dae illegally spied on civilians. He is set to appear at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office as a witness at 10 a.m. Kim, a prosecution investigator who worked at the presidential office, claimed he was ordered to conduct surveillance on citizens. He raised the allegation last month, after he was forced to return to his original post at the prosecution for his alleged attempt to influence a police investigation involving one of his acquaintances.■[2019.01.17]
