    South Korean airlines will cut fuel surcharges for domestic and international flights in February to reflect declining oil prices. Fuel surcharges for one-way international flights will be lowered to 19,200 won from the current maximum of 45,100 won. On domestic flights, the extra charge will be cut to 3,300 won from the current 4,400 won.■[2019.01.17]

  • ≡ Majority Of S. Koreans Think Ex-Chief Justice Should Be Arrested: Poll

    A recent poll shows around two-thirds of South Koreans believe former Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang Sung-tae, embroiled in a judicial power abuse scandal, should be taken into custody for investigation. According to a Realmeter survey commissioned by tbs, around 67 percent of the respondents said Yang should be formally arrested and detained. Some 26 percent opposed the idea. Yang faces allegations that include interfering in high-profile trials and creating a slush fund while serving as chief justice from 2011 to 2017. Prosecutors have grilled him in three rounds of questioning so far, all without detention. The poll surveyed 505 adults nationwide on Wednesday and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points and a confidence level of 95 percent.■ [2019.01.17]

  • ≡ Ex-Cheong Wa Dae Inspector To Face More Questioning Over Surveillance Claims

    Former presidential office inspector Kim Tae-woo has been summoned for a fourth time over claims he made that Cheong Wa Dae illegally spied on civilians. He is set to appear at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office as a witness at 10 a.m. Kim, a prosecution investigator who worked at the presidential office, claimed he was ordered to conduct surveillance on citizens. He raised the allegation last month, after he was forced to return to his original post at the prosecution for his alleged attempt to influence a police investigation involving one of his acquaintances.■[2019.01.17]

  • ≡ Hyundai, Kia Recall Vehicles In US Due To Fire Risks

    Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors will recall more than 160,000 vehicles sold in America to fix a fuel pipe problem. The automakers announced the recall plan in the U.S. on Wednesday, involving cars affected by previous recalls related to engine failures. Software upgrades will also be offered to some 3.7 million vehicles to protect cars from internal damage. The automakers are currently being investigated by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the recall of nearly 1.7 million cars for engine defects in 2017. Kia said it had reports of six fires among the vehicles being recalled for possible fuel leaks while Hyundai said it had no reports of fires.■ [2019.01.17]

    The men's national football team has won Group C at the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup with a 2-0 win over China. Forward Hwang Ui-jo scored on a first-half penalty kick and defensive back Kim Min-jae headed in an insurance goal in the second half at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. Earlier, the Taeguk Warriors defeated the Philippines and Kyrgyzstan both by 1-0, becoming the first team at this year's tournament to win all three group matches without conceding a goal. The top two teams from each of the six groups and the four best No. 3 seeds will advance to the round of 16.
