The ruling Democratic Party has called for changes to the current automobile management law following the recent string of BMW fires.
In an emergency meeting earlier today, ruling party lawmakers met with transport ministry officials and BMW Korea and discussed plans to reinforce punitive damages and ways to improve the recall system, among others.
DP lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok said in a statement that they will come up with measures to penalize automakers that don't take responsibility for their manufacturing mistakes.
BMW Korea Chairman Kim Hyo-joon, who also attended the meeting, outlined measures to prevent future accidents after apologizing for the 30-some fires that have occurred nationwide this year.■
