A ceremony marking 18 years since the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong was held Monday at the South Korean Navy's Second Fleet Command.
Speaking at the event, Rear Admiral Yoo Keun-jong said the country will never forget the sacrifice and devotion of those who were killed.
The ceremony held in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province was attended by military officials and the bereaved families of the fallen soldiers.
On the morning of June 29, 2002, two North Korean ships crossed the de facto maritime border near the northwestern island and suddenly opened fire on a South Korean patrol boat.
The attack left six South Korean sailors dead and 19 others wounded.
