Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun speaks during a meeting at the Central Disaster Management Headquarters.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said Wednesday government will make it mandatory for churches nationwide to follow key quarantine guidelines to block further spread of the coronavirus.
Chung said although churches will not be designated as "high risk" facilities, starting Friday, they will have to adhere to measures such as keeping visitor logbooks and banning gatherings and events aside from regular worship services.
If the guidelines are violated, church officials and members could be fined, he said while speaking at a Central Disaster Management Headquarters meeting.
Chung said the move is inevitable, given the risk infections from churches could pose to the general public, and asked for active cooperation from religious communities.
