U.S. Gen. Robert Abrams, head of the United Nations Command and U.S. Forces Korea, delivers a speech on the 67th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armisitice at the truce village of Panmunjom on July 27, 2020.
The head of the U.S.-led United Nations Command says the armistice that ended the Korean War needs to be maintained until permanent peace is achieved on the Korean Peninsula.
General Robert Abrams made the remark Monday during a ceremony held at the truce village of Panmunjom marking 67 years since the agreement was signed, ending three years of fighting.
He said it has contributed to the security of South Korea.
Abrams also noted that this time last year there was an optimistic mood for inter-Korean relations, however, that atmosphere has changed.
The armistice, signed by U.S. and North Korean forces, ended three years of fighting that began in June 1950, and called for a complete cessation of hostilities until a final peace treaty.
